Morrisons Cafe YorkReview

Kings Manor RefectoryReview

I spent a lot of time umming and arring, wondering whether or not a big supermarket chain should get an entry in York Cafes, but the truth is I do find myself going to Morrisons Cafe a lot. It’s easy, mostly quick and very good value.

When it’s well made the Morrisons Big Breakfast is excellent. You feel very well fed and can get the breakfast with a pot of tea that makes two mug-fulls for about a fiver.

There are no other cafes in York where you can get a large all day (well, up to about 4pm) breakfast and a pot of tea for five pounds.

However, I do feel I ought to caution readers that lunchtimes can be very busy and it has been known for people to wait up to half an hour to get their meals, and they’re often a bit dried out by the time they arrive.

The worst time though is the last half an hour before they stop serving, 6:30pm to 7pm, when the food is bloody terrible. They don’t serve the breakfast at this time, but you can get a cheese omlette that’s as stiff as a board, and dried up baked beans that look like bottom of the pan scrapings.

In fact, if you’re getting there in the last half hour I wouldn’t even bother ordering anything cooked, it’s almost as if the kitchen staff have lost the will to carry on – in reality they’re probably tryin g to clean the kitchen so they can get away at 7PM sharp, which means the service and food suffers. I don’t think this should be the case, no other cafe worth its salt would behave this way.

However, the sandwiches and cakes in the fridge are all a lot cheaper at the end of the day, so if you do get there late I recommend buying sandwiches at half price, and maybe a cream cake if you want a treat.

It is difficult to score York Morrisons Cafe because 80% of the time it’s very good, while the rest of the time it’s a bit poor to totally terrible. Best times are mornings before lunch and afternoons after 2PM.

I wonder if this is typical of Morrisons Cafes, or if it’s just the one in York?
