Cafe Veranda is a queue, order and pay first diner style cafe that I keep returning to time and again, not really because it’s the best in York or the cheapest, but more because it’s very simple. There used to be loads of these types of cafes in York, but over the years they’ve all dwindled away, which is sad. Cafe Veranda has no middle-class pretentions, and I sincerely hope it always stays that way.
It is a simple diner style cafe where you queue, choose your food, then wait a few minutes at your table for it to arrive. The best part is that it really is only a few minutes, I mean less than 5 most of the time. However, the speed does not mean the food quality suffers, it’s actually pretty good and certainly above average for what you’d expect in a diner.
The price is about average, not the lowest but not overly high either. The best deals are the all day breakfasts, but I also enjoy the roast chicken dinners and the steak and kidney pie with potatoes.
Another plus, if you’re like me, is that you get all kinds of people in there, locals and tourists, as it’s right on Petergate near the minster. I like to site by the window and watch everyone walk by, and sometimes see a busker across the street, while sipping away at my generous pot of tea with extra pot of hot water.
